Ever dreamed of turning your nutrition expertise into a scalable business—but felt overwhelmed trying to build a membership that actually works?

You’re not alone. In this episode of How to Build a Profitable Nutrition Business, I had the privilege of chatting with Mike Morrison from Membership Geeks—an absolute legend in the membership space. Mike didn’t just drop nuggets of wisdom… he practically delivered the whole gold mine.

Whether you’ve already tried launching a nutrition membership (and felt like it fizzled), or you’re just exploring how it could fit into your business model, this episode is a must-listen. Here’s the breakdown of what we covered—and how to apply it to your own profitable nutrition business.

Imagine Reaching More Clients—Without Burning Yourself Out

One-on-one consults can only take you so far. And if you’ve ever found yourself back-to-back with clients all day, only to end the week feeling more drained than fulfilled—you know the hustle is real.

That’s why I love the idea of a membership model for nutrition professionals. As Mike puts it:

“Memberships are a marathon, not a sprint… but they’re one of the best ways to help people make lasting change.”

Imagine offering consistent, structured support at an affordable price. You’re not just exchanging time for money—you’re scaling your impact, building community, and giving people the accountability they need to reach their health goals.

Mike’s Framework: The 3 C’s of Every Successful Membership

So how do you actually make it work?

According to Mike, the heart of a high-retention, profitable membership comes down to three things:

1. Content

Provide helpful, consistent, outcome-driven resources. Think meal plans, video tutorials, or a roadmap to achieve a specific health transformation.

2. Coaching

Offer guidance—whether it’s through monthly Q&As, group calls, or mentoring. You don’t need to overcommit, but showing up strategically matters.

3. Community

Here’s where the magic happens. A great community keeps people engaged long after the novelty of new content wears off. And yes, even with just 20–30 members, it can work—if you structure it well.

“People will come for the content, but they’ll stay for the community.” — Mike Morrison

Mike also dropped a smart insight on building rituals and encouraging engagement: from daily meal photo check-ins with hashtags to creating “low hanging fruit” discussions (like fun polls or food-themed questions) that invite everyone to participate, even if they’re shy.

From One-Time Consults to Long-Term Clients

As a dietitian, I’ve experienced the grind of trying to do it all. I’ve launched memberships that didn’t quite take off—usually because I didn’t have the time to give them the focus they deserved. But Mike’s advice really hit home:

“People don’t join memberships for the stuff. They join for what the stuff makes possible.”

It’s not about delivering more content. It’s about delivering transformation.

He also explained the four types of member motivators:

  • Outcome (e.g. lose weight, improve diabetes management)

  • Mastery (ongoing skills and habits)

  • Connection (peer support, community)

  • Resource (access to templates, meal plans, etc.)

For most nutrition memberships, your clients are outcome-driven. That means your role is to provide a clear, step-by-step roadmap to help them get from where they are now, to where they want to be.

Retention is Everything—Here’s How to Keep Members for the Long Haul

It costs way more to attract a new member than to keep an existing one. Mike’s retention tips were gold:

  • Onboard well: “Retention starts day one.” Set clear first steps and help new members feel welcome and confident.

  • Provide wins: Help members see their own progress with check-ins and reflections.

  • Build real community: Make it safe and fun for people to engage.

  • Don’t fear cancellations: “Make the decision to leave hard, but not the process.” Some will come back. Many do.

And a big one that most people overlook?

“Dunning.” In other words, handle failed payments smartly. Many people drop out due to expired cards—not because they want to leave.

So What’s the Best Platform for Your Nutrition Membership?

Quick tip from Mike: Avoid building your paid community on Facebook.

Why? You don’t own the platform, the algorithm can bury your posts, and it often feels “cheap” for a paid product.

Instead, he recommends Circle (if you want a social media feel) or Envision Community Suite (if you want a classic forum-style experience). If you're using Kajabi, it’s a great all-in-one platform, but the community features leave a bit to be desired.

Let Your Membership Fuel Your Entire Business Ecosystem

One of the most powerful takeaways for me?

A well-structured membership can become the centerpiece of your business ecosystem.

“It’s like an email list on steroids.” — Mike Morrison

Members aren’t just paying for content. They’re your most loyal audience. And they’re the first ones who will upgrade to high-ticket programs, attend live events, or book 1:1 services when they need more personalized help.
