How to Build a $1.3M Nutrition Business Through Continuous Improvement
Sep 25, 2024How to Build a $1.3M Nutrition Business Through Continuous Improvement
Starting and growing a successful nutrition business is no small feat. In a recent episode of How to Build a Profitable Nutrition Business, I had the pleasure of speaking with Mitch, a seasoned dietitian and business owner from North Queensland, who shared the highs and lows of his decade-long journey at Health Management Dietitians. His story provides invaluable insights for anyone looking to scale their nutrition practice and create a thriving business.
From Humble Beginnings to Success
Mitch’s path to owning a multi-location practice was anything but linear. After finishing his degree at Sunshine Coast University, he took a job in private practice but quickly realized it wasn’t the perfect fit. However, when he landed a position at Health Management Dietitians, his perspective shifted, and he discovered a passion for both nutrition and business.
“I think it was really cool when you can say, ‘We’ve identified a problem, let’s fix it.’ Whether it’s improving efficiency in administration or upgrading technology, each small change has had a big impact,” Mitch recalls. This mindset of continuous improvement allowed his business to scale from a modest $300,000 turnover to over $1.3 million.
Personalising Care and Scaling Expertise
In regional practices, having a generalist approach is key, but Mitch also ensured his team had specialised skills in areas like sports nutrition and gut health. This balance of generalist knowledge with specialized training allowed them to meet the diverse needs of their clients while maintaining their core values—supportive, friendly, and healthy service.
Mitch emphasises, “We all have to be good at seeing everyone, but having specialists in key areas means we can deliver more personalised care.” This approach has been essential in growing his practice and ensuring long-term client satisfaction.
Key to Growth: Know Your Numbers
A major theme throughout our conversation was the importance of data. Mitch firmly believes that understanding business metrics, from revenue to cancellation rates, is vital to make informed decisions.
“We track everything—how many new clients we get, average revenue per appointment, cancellation rates—so we can always improve,” he explains. This data-driven approach has not only helped optimise day-to-day operations but has also given his team the tools to improve client care and retention.
Creating a Positive Workplace Culture
While numbers are important, Mitch highlights the significance of building and maintaining a strong team culture. He admitted that halfway through his journey, the business hit a rough patch, losing some of the culture that had been so integral to its early success. However, by focusing on professional development, regular work retreats, and fostering an open, supportive environment, he was able to turn things around.
“It just takes one person to add or subtract from your culture,” Mitch advises. “When you get it right, the business thrives.”
The Power of Community and Marketing
In a smaller regional area like North Queensland, word-of-mouth and professional referrals have been crucial. Mitch’s practice receives an average of 150 new clients a month, thanks largely to strong relationships with GPs and other health professionals.
On top of that, Mitch embraced digital marketing through targeted campaigns. Collaborating with News Corp, they used SEO and social media to boost visibility. “We could track whether someone clicked on an ad, visited our website, and booked an appointment,” Mitch explains. This method proved far more effective than traditional print ads, offering measurable results and a higher return on investment.
Final Advice for Aspiring Nutrition Entrepreneurs
If there’s one piece of advice Mitch has for budding nutrition entrepreneurs, it’s this: “Know your numbers. Not just from a financial perspective, but across the board. It allows you to make informed decisions and measure the success of every change you implement.”
Take the Next Step
Whether you’re just starting out or looking to scale your nutrition business, learning from the experience of those who’ve built successful ventures is invaluable. Mitch’s journey underscores the importance of a data-driven approach, personalised care, and a strong team culture.
